Dyslexia Association (LABDA)
(incorporating Selby Dyslexia Association)What is LABDA?LABDA, as it is known, is the shortened name for Leeds and Bradford Dyslexia Association situated in West Yorkshire. It is a group of parents, teachers and others who have a keen interest in dyslexia. The Association was formed in 1987 by two mothers whose children were having difficulties at school, which was later diagnosed as dyslexia. Two years later LABDA obtained charity status. Currently we have a membership of 60 members. We have a committee made up of parents and teachers, all of whom are volunteers: we have no paid staff. LABDA is the local area group affiliated to the British Dyslexia Association (BDA) offering a wide range of support: - We offer a helpline service to help all dyslexic people wherever we can
- A Befriender service for parents who are experiencing difficulties with schools
- Computer club for children from the age of 8 years old
- Acitivities jointly with the BDA
- A library service of dyslexia related books
BDA is the national voice of dyslexic people and their main aims are: - Lobbying for changes in the education system at government level.
- Securing better support for students at university.
- Providing support and training for local Dyslexia Associations.
